Living that dream travelling and blogging
3:14 pm in Blogging Q&A by admin
I think most of us love the idea of travelling around the world and blogging. For some people this is just a dream, but for one lucky family they are living that dream. In the second of seven blogging Q&A’s we’ll learn about the challenges and technology used to be able to really write a blog and use social media while travelling around the world.
Please introduce yourself and your blog
We are a family of three, with a passion for travel, seeking out new experiences, meeting new people, and living simply. Our blog, Got Passport, Will Travel, is about sharing experiences, ideas, and anything we may find inspirational. We document our travels from the past and the current happenings as we prepare to relocate to Thailand in 2010 with our daughter.
Why did you decide to write a blog during your travels?
During our travels of Summer 2009, we were encouraged by a few tweeps to begin blogging our stories. We started blogging in the middle of our trip while we were in Thailand. We share are stories 1) to document our travel memories for our daughter 2) to inspire other families to get out of their comfort zone to explore-it can be done! 3) to document that service to others and travel could be combined with a family in tow 4) to document that travel in and of itself is an educational experience for our child.
What responses have you had from people who read your blog?
Surprisingly, we’ve had many positive and supportive responses for our blog posts. The support and the encouragement from the readers is a definite plus to continue sharing. Please leave comments- we appreciate them.
What are the biggest challenges writing a blog?
It certainly is NOT the short of topics. I have plenty of those. It is the technical side of blogging. This is my first time using WordPress and I think we’ve managed the very basics. I’m hoping over time that I will learn to Master WP. Lots to learn.
I’ve been told I can have ads on my site, but not sure how to do that and that’s not the focus right now, maybe down the road! My other challenge is generating traffic and readership! However, we’re new and we are happy to reach the few we have now and in time it may grow.
What equipment/software/technology do you use to write on your travels?
We bought an Acer while we were on the road (in the US, 2nd part of our Summer road trip, 2009) when we decided we would start blogging seriously. We used our laptop whenever we had access to Wi-Fi at campsites or hotels. We also use our phones to update our Facebook fan page and our own personal page. We uploaded pictures and statuses (HTC phone with T-mobile unlimited text package).
We also take a ton of pictures (2 Cannons), keep receipts and make notes while we can. I wrote a lot in our journal while I was in India (No access to internet). We are brand new bloggers so we are certainly learning the world of blogging one day at a time. While in Thailand, we just got local sim card and paid for unlimited web access while we were there for 1.5 months during this Summer

Great post, and your daughter (as well as both of you!) will be so pleased that you have captured your experiences, thoughts and emotions along the way. These things can be so easily forgotten in the dimness of time. Good on you guys!
@ Andy
Travel is Education; I have always believed that. I will never understand those parents who stuff their children in a creche while they go sightseeing around the destination. You’ll never get better real life experiences than when travelling.
Great to see this! Go for it!
Yes, indeed, traveling the world as a family is a dream come true and the best possible education!
We have been so fortunate to be living this dream and traveling the world non-stop, now into our 4th year! We’ve been to 4 continents, 30 countries & over 150,000 miles so far & find that we can travel the world for much less than living at home!
We also didn’t know anything about blogging when we started, but by sharing our world tour adventures and experiences, we have inspired many to do their own extended travel.
We have been amazed at how this trend has grown since we started & think that this trend will continue to grow now that one does not have to be bound to one place for work or school!
My passion is to let others know that it is cheaper, easier and more enriching than most know! Thanks so much for contributing!
